Louis Khan/ Yale University British Art Gallery

During this semester, I visited Yale University in New Have, Connecticut, where those buildings designed by Louis Khan and Jean Prouv?. I photographed those buildings, so here they are.

The exterior of this building is covered by the oxide film surface steel pannels, and there are almost no windows. The top ceiling window brings in the sun light into the interior space. Those horizontal decorative I-beams attached onto the exterior surface are cut at the concrete framing, and the gaps cast shadows onto the steel pannels with beautiful surfaces.

The sunlight from the top ceilinng is spiled out through the entrance. The quiet, but charged moment before entering the building.

The top ceiling windows of the atrium space. Thick concrete beams divide the ceiling to four corners, and the sun movement gradually shifts the casting of the light. This casted light unites the warm and cool concrete frame, steel pannels, and the warm but excuisitely attached wood pannels together.

(click and enlarge) Stairspace is independent (Louis Kahn's main theme of the "core" of the building) but it also has the top light with glass blocks. Those glass blocks cast prism-like light onto the cool concrete surface.

The architecture of Louis Kahn is filled with the spaces, not just the mass and volume of the inorganic materials, but the spiritual--sublime and at the same time with contentment surrounding visitors--atmospher. It can be said as the architecture resides in the human sensation and spirit beyond surface existence.
