To know about New York, the most interesting book should be (at least for myself) Delirious New York by Rem Koolhaas.

I borrowed the title for my blog. To know about his architectural pieces, this book is a must read. In a sense, he is actualizing his image of a cityscape written in this book one by one. (Since he was a screen writer, he might have written his way of life and how he would live in this book)

It is easy to see the irony and pesimistic standpoint, but it is more productive to see his fascination toward New York as his resource to produce something new and interesting. And those "skyscrapers," which we now think of them as banal and boring 'stuff' filling this New York and everywhere in the world, were once the products of utopian dream, and the process of producing those with the dreams and energy of those fantastic people should be represented and celebrated. Koolhaas describes the stories in very captivating ways, and he tries to make us realize the meaning and existence of this New York city.

For the visitors of New York, such buildings like Empire State, Chrystler Building, and unfortunate WTC are the New York and a big city itself. Because of that iconic character, the incident of 9/11 also happened. As a guide book to know New York, Delirious New York can be recommended. After reading this book, now hidden and burried aspects of this city are gradually revealed, along with the history created by those unknown people and their daily lives.
